When hunky, twenty-year-old heart-throb Heath Ledger first came to the attention of the public in 1999, it was all too easy to tag him as a "pretty boy" and an actor of little depth. He spent several years trying desperately to sway this image, but this was a double-edged sword. His work comprised nineteen films, including 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), The Patriot (2000), A Knight's Tale (2001), Monster's Ball (2001), Ned Kelly (2003), The Brothers Grimm (2005), Lords of Dogtown (2005), Brokeback Mountain (2005), Casanova (2005), Candy (2006), I'm Not There (2007), The Dark Knight (2008) and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). He also produced and directed music videos and aspired to be a film director.
Heath Ledger was born on the fourth of April 1979, in Perth, Western Australia, to Sally (Ramshaw), a teacher of French, and Kim Ledger, a mining engineer who also raced cars. His ancestry was Scottish, English, Irish, and Sephardi Jewish. As the story goes, in junior high school it was compulsory to take one of two electives, either cooking or drama. As Heath could not see himself in a cooking class he tried his hand at drama. Heath was talented, however the rest of the class did not acknowledge his talent. When he was seventeen he and a friend decided to pack up, leave school, take a car and rough it to Sydney. Heath believed Sydney to be the place where dreams were made or, at least, where actors could possibly get their big break. Upon arriving in Sydney with a purported sixty-nine cents to his name, Heath tried everything to get a break.
His first real acting job came in a low-budget movie called Blackrock (1997), a largely unimpressive cliché; an adolescent angst film about one boy's struggle when he learns his best mate raped a girl. He only had a very small role in the film. After that small role Heath auditioned for a role in a T.V. show called Sweat (1996) about a group of young Olympic hopefuls. He was offered one of two roles, one as a swimmer, another as a gay cyclist. Heath accepted the latter because he felt to really stand out as an actor one had to accept unique roles that stood out from the bunch. It got him small notice, but unfortunately the show was quickly axed, forcing him to look for other roles. He was in Home and Away (1988) for a very short period, in which he played a surfer who falls in love with one of the girls of Summer Bay. Then came his very brief role in Paws (1997), a film which existed solely to cash in on guitar prodigy Nathan Cavaleri's brief moment of fame, where he was the hottest thing in Australia. Heath played a student in the film, involved in a stage production of a Shakespeare play, in which he played "Oberon". A very brief role, this offered him a small paycheck but did nothing to advance his career. Then came Two Hands (1999). He went to the U.S. trying to audition for film roles, showcasing his brief role in Roar (1997) opposite then unknown Vera Farmiga.
Then Australian director Gregor Jordan auditioned him for the lead in Two Hands (1999), which he got. An in your face Aussie crime thriller, Two Hands (1999) was outstanding and helped him secure a role in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). After that, it seemed Heath was being typecast as a young hunk, which he did not like, so he accepted a role in a very serious war drama The Patriot (2000).
What followed was a stark inconsistency of roles, Ledger accepting virtually every single character role, anything to avoid being typecast. Some met with praise, like his short role in Monster's Ball (2001), but his version of Ned Kelly (2003) was an absolute flop, which led distributors hesitant to even release it outside Australia. Heath finally had deserved success with his role in Brokeback Mountain (2005). For his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in in the film, Ledger won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor and Best International Actor from the Australian Film Institute, and was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Ledger was found dead on January 22, 2008 in his apartment in the Manhattan neighborhood of SoHo, with a bottle of prescription sleeping pills near-by. It was concluded weeks later that he died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs that included pain-killers, sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication. His death occurred during editing of The Dark Knight (2008) and in the midst of filming his last role as Tony in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009).
Posthumously, he shared the 2007 Independent Spirit Robert Altman Award with the rest of the ensemble cast, the director, and the casting director for the film I'm Not There (2007), which was inspired by the life and songs of American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. In the film, Ledger portrayed a fictional actor named Robbie Clark, one of six characters embodying aspects of Dylan's life and persona.
A few months before his death, Ledger had finished filming his performance as the Joker in 'The Dark Knight (2008). His untimely death cast a somber shadow over the subsequent promotion of the $185 million Batman production. Ledger received more than thirty posthumous accolades for his critically acclaimed performance as the Joker, the psychopathic clown prince of crime, in the film, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, a Best Actor International Award at the 2008 Australian Film Institute Awards (for which he is the second actor to win an acting award posthumously after Peter Finch who won an Oscar for Network (Best Actor 1977)), the 2008 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actor, the 2009 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor - Motion Picture, and the 2009 BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor.- Actor

Katherine Langford (born 29 April 1996) is an Australian actress. She is known for starring as Hannah Baker in the 2017 Netflix series 13 Reasons Why (2017), based on the novel of the same name, for which she received a Golden Globe Award nomination. In 2018, she appeared as Leah Burke in the romantic comedy-drama film Love, Simon (2018).
Langford was born in Perth and raised in Perth, Western Australia. She is the eldest daughter of Elizabeth Langford, a pediatrician, and Stephen Langford, a flying doctor and director of medical services at the Royal Flying Doctor Service Western Operations. She began voice lessons in 2005, and received classical, jazz, and contemporary vocal training. She was offered a place at Perth Modern School for her senior high years, where she studied music and drama, and was sports captain and a nationally ranked swimmer.
Initially during her time at high school, Langford was interested in medicine and politics, in addition to musical theatre. However, in 2012, when Langford was 16, she attended Lady Gaga's concert, the Born This Way Ball, which inspired her to learn how to play the piano. She shared video of herself singing three original songs she wrote: "I've Got a Crush on Zoe Bosch," "Young and Stupid," and "3 Words." "Young and Stupid" is an anti-suicide song she wrote in 2013 after three Perth teens took their lives. For her final year at Perth Modern, Langford stopped swimming and switched her focus to music and performance. She was successful in a number of musical eisteddfods and drama competitions. Langford appeared in the school's production of Hotel Sorrento in 2013 and graduated that same year.
After graduating high school, Langford was determined to become an actor. However, she was rejected from every acting school she applied to, on the grounds she was too young and did not have enough life experience. This led her to begin enrolling in acting classes and workshops in Perth, juggling three part-time jobs, and later finding herself an agent. From 2014 to 2015, Langford studied at the Principal Academy of Dance & Theatre Arts, majoring in Music Theatre, and appeared in a production of Godspell. She was then one of five selected to participate in the National Institute of Dramatic Arts Advanced Actors Residency in 2015. In the same year, she trained at Nicholson's Academy of Screen Acting and portrayed the role of Juan Perón's mistress in the 2015 production of Evita. Langford was offered a position in the Bachelor of Arts program in Acting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and intended to begin studies in 2016. However, she never enrolled and instead pursued professional roles.
Langford appeared as the lead character in a small independent short film, Daughter (2016) which debuted at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. At the end of 2016, after declining the offer from Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Langford auditioned and was asked to test for Riverdale, and Will, a television series centered on the young life of William Shakespeare. She did not get either role, which were instead given to Lili Reinhart, and Olivia DeJonge.
Langford auditioned for the role in the mystery teen drama TV series 13 Reasons Why over Skype and had only 10 days to get an O-1 visa as she had not worked in the United States before. She has received critical acclaim for her portrayal of the American high school student Hannah Baker in 13 Reasons Why. Langford researched the role, speaking with a representative of the sexual assault awareness campaign "It's On Us" and a psychiatrist who specializes in adolescence. In December 2016, she signed with the William Morris Endeavor agency.
In 2018 Langford appeared in her first feature film, Love, Simon, an adaptation of the coming-of-age novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, by Becky Albertalli.- Actress

She is an actress and assistant director, known for The Wicker Man (2006), Flightplan (2005) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003).- Freya Tingley was born in Perth, Australia (the most isolated city in the world) on March 26, 1994. From a very young age, Freya took to performing, where she explored modeling, singing, dancing and the like, but it finally clicked when she enrolled in an acting school. The ability to inhabit other characters, far away from her own personality, provided a creative high unlike anything she had experienced. With an admiration for character actors such as Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman, she decided to follow in their footsteps.
Taking the leap of faith at the tender age of seventeen, Freya's supportive mum allowed her to move to Hollywood to "give it a shot for a year" -- her only plan B being a bakery in Perth where she had a part-time shift. Now, it is true that Freya makes a great muffin with raspberries and white chocolate, but it is hardly her calling. Determined, she went on hundreds of auditions and on the very day of her 18th birthday, she booked Netflix's second original series Hemlock Grove, helmed by horror master Eli Roth.
The rest, as they say, is history as she went on to play a variety of characters in both TV and film including originating the "Wendy Darling" character in the Peter Pan segment of Once Upon a Time for ABC, as well as Franki Valli's troubled daughter in the film adaptation of the Broadway smash Jersey Boys, directed by Clint Eastwood -- a personal hero of Freya's, and like Clint, she has plans to make the transition from actor to actor/director in the near future.
She still cooks muffins with raspberries and white chocolate, but is proud to call the film industry her vocation, and most importantly, her passion. - Known for his breakout role as Nate Macauley in Peacock/Netflix's hit series One Of Us Is Lying, Cooper has been in the industry since a young age.
Gaining his start on ABC series The Legend of Gavin Tanner, van Grootel enjoyed back to back key roles on major projects including ABC series Mystery Road with Oscar Nominee Judy Davis. He then went on to play bad boy 'Dean' in feature film Go Karts, continuing his run of delivering stand out performances and playing characters with an edge. Directed by multi-award-winning Owen Trevor, van Grootel played opposite Golden-Globe nominee Frances O'Conor and Moulin Rouge star Richard Roxburgh.
He has since gone on to be cast in Snow Valley and One True Loves (starring Luke Bracey and Simu Liu).
An actor with a grounded nature who is firmly focused on the craft, Cooper often comments that his acting interest was sparked by fascination with animated films, such as 'Coraline' and 'Toy Story' to name a few. Inspired by many actors who came before him, van Grootel points to how Heath Ledger is an inspiration. Ledger's journey from Perth boy to Hollywood star was one that Cooper always admired and believed if Heath could do it, so could he.
Although based in LA Cooper looks forward to continuing working on exciting Australian projects like Savage River. - Zoe Ventoura was born on 19 August 1981 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. Australian actor and former elite cyclist Nathan Page, best known internationally for his nuanced portrayal of Detective Inspector Jack Robinson in Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (2012), was born into an air force family in Perth on 25 August 1971. He moved frequently around the country while growing up and went to school predominantly in Canberra and Melbourne.
Page started cycling at the age of 14 in Canberra "as a random new thing to try". He subsequently raced up through the ranks to the state level in NSW and began to compete at the national level within the year. He had the attention of the Australian Institute of Sport by the time he was 16, at which time he moved to Adelaide with a scholarship. His international career in individual and team pursuit took off immediately: He left for Europe for an initial tour of three months with the trips becoming longer as he grew older. He retired from the sport at 19 because of a combination of numerous injuries and the now commonly known drug culture in the sport.
Page channeled the toughness and discipline acquired as an athlete into acting, starting with a Tuesday night drama class and going on to study at the Centre for Performing Arts (now Adelaide College of the Arts) for three years. His early roles were on the Adelaide stage, where he played a variety of roles ranging from Shakespeare's Duncan in Macbeth and Faust in UR Faust to Nick in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? He first appeared in a feature film in 1999, in Strange Fits of Passion (1999). In 2000, he starred along Kylie Minogue as the character of Len in Sample People (2000). His first appearance as a recurring character on a television show was in the third season of The Secret Life of Us (2001) in 2003. His other notable roles on TV include that of Ray "Chuck" Bennett in three episodes of Underbelly (2008), Alasdair "Mac" Macdonald in Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo (2011), and Henry Stokes in six episodes of Underbelly (2008).
Page's breakout role, however, was that of Detective Inspector Jack Robinson in the Australian show Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (2012), based on Kerry Greenwood's well-known novel series. While this character is comparatively minor in the books, it was conceived from the very planning stages of the TV series as being the romantic male lead against the Indiana Jones/James Bond-style female lead, Phryne Fisher (played by the incomparable Essie Davis). The combination of Nathan's matinee-idol-style good looks, unique voice, and nuanced acting ensured that his character drew an immediate global fan following. He reprised the role in Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears (2020).
Page returned to the stage in 2016 in Deborah Bruce's The Distance and Patrick Barlow's The 39 Steps.
Nathan Page is also a voice actor, and has voiced numerous television commercials in Australia.

Val Lehman began her acting career with a brief stint at the National Theatre Drama School, and then wrote, directed and performed a revue whilst studying towards an Arts Degree at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Put her acting ambitions on hold after her marriage to raise three children though during this period worked extensively with amateur acting groups in various parts of Australia, in Singapore and in England, UK. Turned professional, working initially as an extra in television productions, and spent five years touring with the Children's Arena Theatre, playing in 'Dimboola' and several other productions. Next won several small featured roles in television series such as rural serial Bellbird (1967) and Tandarra (1976), in TV-movie Outbreak of Love (1981), and mini-series Power Without Glory (1976). In 1978 Val Lehman scored the plumb role of tough "inmate boss" Bea Smith in a new sixteen part women's prison television serial called Prisoner (1979). The series became an instant hit and the sixteen episodes were soon extended and the series became an indefinitely running serial. Bea Smith quickly emerged as the central character in most of the storylines and Lehman became one of the most popular Television actresses of the period. During the four and a half years she played the role Val Lehman won three Logies as Most Popular and Best Lead Actress in a television series. Left the series in 1983 and appeared in play Trafford Tanzi, and television mini-series A Fortunate Life (1986). The Producers of "Prisoner" asked Lehman to return to the series on three occasions though she always refused, saying she had taken the character as far as it could go. Several other television appearances followed, however, like many soap stars before her, Val Lehman found that the expected meaty roles and long-running fame failed to materialise, with Bea Smith remaining the highlight of her career. During the 1990s Lehman spent several years living in England, where, as had been the case in Australia, she was unable to find much work as she was so recognisable through her work in "Prisoner". In the late 1990s returned to Australia where she had guest roles in television programmes Blue Heelers (1994) and Good Guys Bad Guys (1997).- Actress

Judy Nunn was born on 13 April 1945 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. She is an actress and writer, known for The Box (1974), Sons and Daughters (1982) and The Box (1975). She has been married to Bruce Venables since 1988.- Once described early in his career as Australia's version of 1950's Hollywood action star Jeff Chandler, sharing his rugged looks and intense performances, Gerard began in theater before moving to television playing memorable villains in Homicide (1964). This led to his breakthrough role as enemy espionage agent Kragg in Hunter (1967), the arch nemesis of the title character played by Tony Ward. The Kragg role proved so popular with audiences that the producers surprisingly had the character change sides to become Hunter's ally. Following Ward's departure from the series, Gerard assumed the lead role, before he was given his own show, playing reliable Detective Frank Banner in Division 4 (1969). This role would last six years and earn him many awards, including two gold Logies as most popular personality on Australian television.
Following his long period playing Banner, Gerard had lead roles in many successful series and mini-series, including Tandarra (1976), Against the Wind (1978), and The Last Outlaw (1980). Much preferring to be part of an ensemble cast rather than as the star, he then took roles in established series, such as the airport manager in Skyways (1979), and later as the dependable Luke Mitchell in The Flying Doctors (1986). Continuing his long acting career in both movies and television, one of Gerard's more recent roles was as a memorable gangland patriarch in the controversial mini series Underbelly (2008). But he will always be identified for his realistic portrayals of idealist agent Kragg, and dedicated cop Frank Banner, roles that made him a reluctant television celebrity, rather than the versatile character actor he had intended to become. - Natalie Saleeba is an Australian born actress best known for her roles as Jessica Singleton in the medical drama series All Saints, Rosie Cammeniti on Neighbours and as Doctor Abigail Albert on the Logie award winning series House Husbands on which she starred through seasons 1- 5. Lovely, shapely and appealing blonde bombshell Cheryl Rixon was born on October 12, 1954 in Perth, Western Australia. Cheryl was twice a finalist in the Annual Miss West Coast bikini beauty pageant in the early 70s and was a hostess on a local Australian game show. She made her film debut in the amusingly lowbrow soft-core comedy romp Plugg (1975). Cheryl did guest spots portraying three different characters on a trio of episodes for the TV series Homicide (1964) and had a recurring role in the comedy soap opera The Box (1974). Rixon was the "Pet of the Month" in the December, 1977 issue of "Penthouse". In 1979, Cheryl was named "Pet of the Year" in a televised pageant held at the Aladdin hotel in Las Vegas; she did follow-up nude pictorials in the November, 1979 and January, 1980 issues of that popular men's magazine. In addition, Rixon posed for nude pictorials for the men's magazines "Oui" and "Playboy". Cheryl has acted in a handful of movies; she was quite funny and engaging as the bubbly "Annie" in Swap Meet (1979) and had a memorably sexy small role in the hilariously raucous Used Cars (1980). In July, 1980, Rixon kicked off New York City Mayor Ed Koch's "Festival of Fragrances". In 1985, she sued "Penthouse" magazine in the New York State Supreme Court for failing to give her various prizes promised to her; this was later affirmed on appeal. Cheryl went on to become a rock singer and continued modeling up until the mid-80s. In 1996, Cheryl Rixon launched her own line of designer jewelry called "Royal Order".- Cinematographer

A somewhat underrated figure in cinematographic history, Australian-born Robert Krasker handled some of the most memorable films made in Britain after the Second World War. In his youth he attended art classes in Paris and studied photography at the Photohaendler Schule in Dresden. He briefly worked for Paramount in Paris before joining Alexander Korda's London Films at Denham Studios in 1932. As a camera operator, Krasker cut his teeth on Technicolor spectacles like The Four Feathers (1939) and The Thief of Bagdad (1940). From 1942, he worked as director of photography, showing his flair in all photographic media, from the softly lit, subtle black & white of Brief Encounter (1945) to the gaudy 'cartoon colour' pageantry of Henry V (1944).
He adopted a suitably harsher, almost semi-documentary look working with director Carol Reed on Odd Man Out (1947) and The Third Man (1949). Both films are characterised by expressionistic camera angles, chiaroscuro lighting and conspicuous close-ups. Krasker deservedly won an Oscar for his work on 'The Third Man' and went on to shoot the visually glorious Senso (1954) for Luchino Visconti in Italy, in turn followed by one of the best-looking epics of the 50s: El Cid (1961) -- with its famous long shot of the dead hero, riding away tied upright to his horse. Krasker's style of photography went out of fashion with the increasing popularity of the New Wave in the 1960s. Disenchantment, combining with failing health led to his retirement in 1965. One of the great cameramen of cinema's "Golden Age", he deserves to be remembered.- Actor

- One of Australia's most recognisable actors, Alwyn Kurts had previously been an accredited war correspondent, before becoming a notable figure in Melbourne radio in the 1950s via his program "Raising A Husband", and as an executive at radio station 3XY.
Shortly after television arrived in 1956, he transferred "Raising A Husband" from radio, going on to host other TV game shows "Hutton's Family Quiz" and "Dont Argue". He compered the debate program "Fighting Words" in the early 1960s, before moving into acting with guest roles in "Hunter" and "Homicide".
He became a household name after joining the regular cast of "Homicide" in 1969 as Inspector Colin Fox. His portrayal of the gruff policeman won him much praise, leading to a flood of work when he exited the series in 1973.
He was (briefly) one of the hosts on the local version of "Beauty & The Beast", before stunning critics and viewers alike as Ted Cook in the sit-com "The Last Of The Australians". As the hapless bigot frustrated at every turn, Kurts showed a remarkable comic talent which had only been hinted at in "Homicide".
He joined the cast of "Cop Shop" in 1982 as Senior Sergeant Reg Wallis, staying for a year. Thereafter, he made occasional guest appearances in local TV drama and movies, including a marvellous character role as Mr. Ball in "Spotswood", whilst enjoying a well-earned retirement. He died in 2000. - Writer
